Longbows

The long bow gets its name from its length. A longbow is a D shaped bow with slender limbs that stands roughly the height of the person who uses the bow. While the log bow is tall, its lighter than many other shorter bows made of wider limbs or a more elaborate design. Long bows have the hunting advantage over other bows of generally being a rather quiet bow.

Considering the height of the long bow, it is surprising effective as a hunting bow. With practice, a hunter can shoot a long bow from almost any position, even prone position. An accurate aim can be achieved with a long bow even if the bow is aimed at an odd angle.

A proper longbow should have no significant recurving and its limbs should be fairly narrow. The draw of longbow should reach at least to the jaw area of the archer. Many of the modern competitions that have longbow divisions do not allow older more medieval styles of bows. The English Longbow Society mandates that a bow must be made so that its thickness is at least 5/8 of its width in order to be eligible. Medieval longbows were drastically different and were usually at least 30-40% percent thick as they were wide. This old style of longbow, which was used extensively in British wars of the Middle Ages would not be allowed in competitions today.

The earliest longbows were self bows and were used by indigenous people around the world for war fare and hunting. Japan has been making quality long bows since ancient times and many were made of laminated bamboo using methods not seen in Europe until decades later. In Europe, the English and Welsh were renowned longbow makers and used them successfully in the Hundred Years War.

Today longbows are obviously not use din warfare, but there is still a large community of enthusiasts who enjoy using them for hunting and target shooting. Most longbows that are used today are made of laminated wood or occasionally fiberglass. The advantage of modern bows is you can leave them strung for extended periods of time. Older wood bows had to be unstrung as soon as you were done suing them.
