Crossbows

One of the more efficient hunting bows is a cross bow. A crossbow consists of a bow mounted on a stock, also known as a stick, which secures the drawn bow string. A device on the stock part of the cross bow holds the drawn bow string in place until the hunter chooses to release it by using a trigger on the cross bow.

The design of the crossbow enables the hunter to keep his arrow or other projectile in firing position for an extended period of time with very little effort. This allows hunters to aim better with less time spent setting up the shot. In any hunting situation its important to be able to react quickly, so having a cross bow set up and ready to fire at any given moment is a tremendous advantage. Find Bow Hunting Supplies here.

Crossbow hunting is becoming a growing a sport in North America and many areas are legalizing it again or considering it. The use of crossbows has a long and checkered past and its legality is still under constant scrutiny. Crossbows have historically been an important and effective tool in warfare and hunting around the world, and they are still a useful and challenging tool for hunting and target practice today.

A crossbow is basically a bow attached to a stick called a stock or tiller with a release mechanism to hold the string. Modern crossbows use a trigger system to hold and release the bolt or arrow. The trigger is made of iron and is very strong, and it can be kept cocked and ready to fire for a long time. This allows the archer adequate time to aim at the target. The prod of a crossbow is much shorter than on other bows and that allows for much shorter draw length. The bowstring is called a bridle and its usually made of whipcord or other strong fiber material. There are various types of crossbows including recurve styles, compound styles, and repeaters. Compound crossbows are constructed in the same way as a compound bow and they are the variety most modern archer use. The smallest type of crossbow is a pistol crossbow. There are also handheld models that shoot sphere-shaped projectiles instead of cylindrical bolts.

Modern bolts are the most common type of projectile used by todays crossbow archers and they are usually stamped with proof marks which help ensure consistent weight. They usually have 3 fletches similar to an arrows fletch. There is a variety of different types of heads that can be fitted onto a crossbow bolt depending on the application. The most common type of head is a 4 sided point called a quarrel.

Todays archers usually use a laser guided or telescopic site similar to the sites used on most firearms. These sites will often include multiple crosshairs and markings to ensure greater accuracy. A quiver can also be attached to a crossbow to hold the ammo and its usually made of plastic and designed to bolt on in a parallel position to the string.
