Composite Bows

With a composite bow, different materials are laminated together to take advantage of the unique qualities each material possesses. Over the years everything from wood to bamboo to animal products has been used in the construction of composite bows. The layering of materials that differed in their resiliency and elasticity enhanced the overall elasticity of the composite bow.

The flexible nature of composite bows enables a hunter to shoot an arrow far and with great velocity. The limbs of composite bows allow for an impressive draw weight for a bow with shorter limbs. Modern composite bows may include such disparate materials as laminated wood, fiberglass, and carbon fiber pieces. Whatever materials are used, composite bows retain their appeal for hunters for their flexibility and performance.

When you’re shopping for a composite bow there a number of factors you will want to consider. The first of decision is to decide if you want a factory made mass produced bow or a custom handmade produced with the traditional methods. If you are buying the bow to do occasional target practice or you are a beginner to composite bow archery you might want to consider a mass produced bow. They are much less expensive and they require less maintenance.

If you are seasoned archery enthusiast and have a larger budget there are some advantages to a hand made bow. The bow will be of a higher quality and built to stricter standards, also the bow maker will consult with you to make a bow that meets you exact specifications down to the tiniest details. It will be a one of a kind piece that may serve you for the rest of your life and even your kids and grandkids.

Cost is a big for consideration for most of us though, so the price of the bow will probably affect your decision. A fiberglass bow can be as cheap as 20 or 30 dollars for a very basic model to several hundred for a top of the line more professional model. A hand made bow will probably set you back at least $1800-$3000, the level of quality of that type of product does not come cheap.

Whichever route you choose to go, there are some qualities and specs of the bow that you will want to consider when you’re shopping or ordering one. You will want to figure out the best draw weight for your strength and body frame. Test out a few bows and see which draw weight is most comfortable for you.

The Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Association (AMO) determines manufacturing standards for all bows that are produced. This is the organization that determines the official AMO length for the bow string. Composite bow are tested by putting the string under loaded tension from the outside of the pin to the opposite pin and then testing its tolerance after 20 seconds. The AMO length of the bow you choose should fit with what draw weight you’re comfortable with.

Once you have your ideal bow, you will want to consult an expert about maintenance. A good instructor can teach you how to care for your bow and how to string and adjust the bow, and may be able to give you some other basic archery instruction.
